I wanted to show off how Anders is wearing his saddle. I figure anything above, and around his neck, would suck, and would make for poor flying and an unsturdy saddle.

Dragons who choose to have rider will have their wing membrane slit where the belt of the saddle goes. This usually done as adults, so they can give their consent. The membrane is healed naturally, though magic's are used to dull the pain of the procedure.

I pitty Anders right now cause it kinda looks like he would of had a very painfull operation at some stage to get that saddle strap through his win membrane
Amocin 7th Mar 2016, 8:32 AM edit delete reply
Amocin
Not overly so, magic is used to dull the pain. Also, when this is done, most tend to get their dragon's consent. Dragons are intelligent creatures, and body mods are not something every dragon is okay with just for the sake of an easier ride. For the dragons that do not approve of it, their riders ride bareback.

Ahh, I failed to see that.
On the left side I can see that happening since the leather of the saddle is flush with the wings, on the right side though...wouldn't the saddle have metal parts in it which would require the saddle to either need a bigger cut or to be built in. Both of which (according to me) would cause chafing and rashes...
For a matter of fact, wouldn't both sides chafe if you didn't built a system around the membrane to prevent that? If it were to chafe wouldn't the wing membrane become too painful/cause too much damage to fly with over a long period of time? Especially under stressful conditions. (Hard banking or fighting against wind etc.)
What if the saddle got wet? The leather would chafe even more in that scenario thus making flying in rain or any sort of moisture inadvisable. Speaking of: if there was moisture on the saddle and Anders went into anywhere that is cold the saddle would freeze to the wings...
I don't know, kinda only half thinking this through.
Amocin 8th Mar 2016, 1:33 PM edit delete reply
Amocin
The metal part of the saddle could be turned side ways to make it through the portion of the wing that was cut, and then turned right side once it was on the other side.

As for chafing from too much movement, the saddle shouldnt move at all, though there can be tension from one side to the next at times, it should not be happening frequently enough to have such an issue.

Reptiles do not sweat, so there isnt a lot of moisture that could get under the saddle. In the event that it were to get wet from the rain, it should be treated the same as you would a horse saddle... in the fact that it should not be worn for long periods of time, and should be cleaned/dried.

I half thought about and also half typed that message.
I could probably type up a whole paragraph about things I've read that state that wings are easy to damage and other stuff like that but I won't because that would be typical on my part and it would annoy people...and I'm exhausted enough not to get my facts straight.
I still think that with enough magic or technology you could make a better saddle than that design...maybe a little bit heavier but still...
Why does Anders design have to be so inconvenient?
Guest 7th Mar 2016, 6:11 AM edit delete reply
She's so brash she's not even thinking this through, the poor dear.

As always, Very Nice!!

However there is one thing bothering me. .....is'nt the saddle belt just a bit large in comparison to Kinar? I mean thinking in relative terms, a horse's saddle belt is not nearly that large....
Of course it could also be a play on perspective, in which case this would be categorized as a Stupid question......please forgive me if this is the case.
And I would tend to think having one's membrane cut would suck just as bad as having a saddle strap around the neck.....however, I can certainly see the advantage's of this design over the "around the neck type. "
Amocin 7th Mar 2016, 8:30 AM edit delete reply
Amocin
The belt is a bit large, its been a long time since I last dealt with saddling a horse. The belt is also situated a lot closer to the front legs, going just under the 'armpit'. It's a design im still working on.

As far as having the membrane cut, I think its akin to getting your ear's pierced. There is no muscle in that area, so its not as painful if they made a hole in his leg or something.
Viverred 7th Mar 2016, 8:47 AM edit delete reply
a wide belt will have less issues with slippage, and be more comfortable in the long haul. especially if it is padded on the 'working' side. i imagine that since it goes through slits in the wing slippage would be a big problem.
Dargon 7th Mar 2016, 11:13 AM edit delete reply
Dargon
Indeed I agree with the "Wide Belt" therey....what I am saying is that the belt is overly Fat and the Buckle is larger than the riders head. 0.0
Longtail 7th Mar 2016, 9:58 AM edit delete reply
That makes a lot of sense. It's common for animals with a significant amount of webbed skin (ducks and their feet, bats and their wings) to get wounds and tears in the webbing and they barely bat an eyelid about it in terms of pain usually. Bat wings can heal even significant losses of membrane.

This little factoid amuses and pleases my inner biology and medical nerd.
Dargon 7th Mar 2016, 11:22 AM edit delete reply
Dargon
Okay, for a moment there I thought perhaps it was just me not understanding perspective's well.....
A horse's saddle belt tends to be much wider that it is thick, though I can fully understand the flaws in this....it's been Ages since I have drawn a belt and seriously doubt I could/would have done any better. ;p

Yes, now that makes sense. The membrane likely would not have nearly as many nerve ending's in it either since it's primary function would be capturing air, and I wouldn't think you would need much of a feel sensation for that.
Funny, when I got my ear pierced with a gun, didn't feel a thing! But with a needle one drunken night......Very painful! 0.o
dawndemonica 7th Mar 2016, 2:02 PM edit delete reply
the thick belt is because, unlike a horse, the rider of a dragon has the possibility of going upside down and that would probably break the belt if it were using a normal horse saddle.

Furry comment: No mortal is gonna ride me dammit!!

Anders seems... less then convinced of this 'reason'... But will he protest in more then just disapproving grunts? Guess that depends on how important people thinking he can't talk is hehehehe

This page makes me realize again how beautiful Netherdrakes are :0
Awesome as always :)
But there are two little questions bugging me..
First, isn't the blue shard at Anders head in the first panel a bit to long at the underside ? In the other panels it looks like it goest smooth out of his head and in the first panel its underside is longer than in the others
Second, and with that im not quite sure, in the first panel the wing in the background has a sharp thorn out of his elbow, which is seen from the upper view ot the wing. The front wing, seen from under the wing, doesn't have that shard. Im not sure if they're only sightable from the upper view so im not sure abt that :/

Sorry if i got it wrong and sorry for possible misspelling ^^
Keep up the awesome work, really enjoying the comic and happy for every new page i can read :)

Lovely page =)

As for the saddle, I actually had a design that allows for the saddle to fit snugly without needing to make a slit within the wing membrane tho it does cause for the saddle to do some slight shifting compared to the slit in the wing version =)
Panther 8th Mar 2016, 10:32 AM edit delete reply
Panther
A lot of drawers/movie producers have resolved this problem by tying the saddle to the neck and tail , and not around the body . Some others have chosen to fix it around the front legs , as in Eragon movie : https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/87/ee/92/87ee9275ea2cd954e3280d18253274b3.jpg

Saphira's wings are situated further back, making that saddle more possible. Thats the wonderful thing about original content, they can make the dragon's body the way they want for things to be situated correctly. Any saddle that goes around the neck and then tail would not work for the current design for Anders as it would have to go over the membrane that follows the tail. Also such a harness would not only be highly uncomfortable, but also make it difficult for a lot of free movement, arching the back for instance, would become near impossible.

Not in comic.. There will be non-canon appearances of adult scenes, but I dont imagine Koutack could so easily move on from his wife, this is somebody he was with for 30+ years.
dragonsrawesome 13th Mar 2016, 8:19 PM edit delete reply
An idea on a saddle could be one where the main saddle sits in the middle of the back, and the straps go up to the point the neck touches the torso, and then it splits at the wing base, going around the front on either side and looping under the forelimb, then coming together at the underbelly. Going down the back it could be just two straps holding it in place with padding beneath before splitting at the point where the hind legs touch the lower torso, coming around behind and through the crotch, forming a V pattern with the point facing the front of the dragon. Then, one large strap would connect the back to the front along the dragon's underbelly. How does that sound?
