It seems that someone will have problems soon , in the last panel XD

I hope that Jetnara is trusty ? Normally , all anthros can "smell" if someone lies ; but i don't know if this ability exists in WoW ......
Amocin 23rd Jan 2017, 2:02 PM edit delete reply

Honestly I hate that 'anthros/werefolk can smell lies" stuff. Do animals really smell lies? What do lies smell like? It is a gift/ability in some RPs that people can purchase with EXP but it is not something everybody typically gets for free.

It also harms a story. People lying can create tension and uncertainty. If everybody was honest 100% of the time, it would be very difficult for them to do anything sneeky, and it would take away doubt from the reader. You kinda need those things.
Lenanu 23rd Jan 2017, 3:16 PM edit delete reply
What it is with the 'can smell lies' part is often when a person lies, they become nervous and that produces a scent. Unless the person is well practice in lies that they arn't at all nervous about it in general animals can scent unease/sweat caused by it.
Amocin 23rd Jan 2017, 5:41 PM edit delete reply
Amocin
I can understand that to some extent, but it still seems like a poor storytelling device from my perspective/opinion. One or two characters having the ability is fine, but when we are talking that a race as a whole can just do it, even though dogs are trained to sniff out certain things, and other dogs are not so great at sniffing out things... putting everybody on the same level is just silly. Would seem that is something that not everybody should get.

And the half truths or learning to not be nervous leaves room for plot holes, again, my opinion.. Not a fan of this 'ability' for an entire race of people.

As Shai pointed out in earlier pages, you want to sniff stuff out, you must train yourself, and some people can smell better than others. There is a reason you typically see the same type/breeds of dog in crime units.
Pim 23rd Jan 2017, 3:57 PM edit delete reply
I read mercedes thompson novels, werewolf and fairies everywhere, the formers can smell lies, the laters cannot...
All the tension comes with the fact that, knowing it, most of them are pros at half truths and playing on literallity.
Fair amount of tension when you ask "will I be safe" and all you get is : "from me ? Yes"
Amocin 23rd Jan 2017, 5:48 PM edit delete reply
Amocin
So then you have to ask yourself, why is it that half truths dont get picked up? Because a Half truth, is also a half lie.. Why wouldnt they pick up that it smells a 'little bit' like a lie?

It leaves too much room for error on the writers part. People can be good at detecting lies without it having to be about smell.
Guest 23rd Jan 2017, 7:46 PM edit delete reply
There is also the Daredevil method of lie detecting which I could see as being slightly more reliable, and reasonable, for most anthros in that you could hear ones heartbeat since their hearing is usually better than a humans. Although that would make people with more fur more capable of lying what with all the padding. Also this is something that would have to be learned as well, though probably easier to learn than differing scents.
Amocin 23rd Jan 2017, 8:18 PM edit delete reply
Amocin
That seems more reasonable, like a lie detector, he is seeing how they are reacting, which is the same as knowing somebody's 'tell'. Like..I know my husband well enough that I know when he is lying. I know the faces he makes, I know the gestures, I know when he is bluffing or full of shit.

How would sweat really be different if somebody was nervous than when they are worked up? Afraid? Angry? As far as I am aware, we dont actually smell, bacteria do, they are just reacting to our body heat/sweat. So how would those bacteria send off a different smell from when you are angry or afraid? I dont think they would.

All I am arguing is that there are so many problems I can see with 'smelling' lies. There are just too many problems with it that I can ever see it as reasonable.

Hearing somebody's heartbeat, picking up on more subtle motions in their actions by superior perception, those things make sense.
Inqu 26th Jan 2017, 5:40 AM edit delete reply
Lie detectors are notoriously unreliable and cant even be used in court anymore as evidence if im not mistaken ( In the 1998 US Supreme Court case United States v. Scheffer, the majority stated that "There is simply no consensus that polygraph evidence is reliable" and "Unlike other expert witnesses who testify about factual matters outside the jurors' knowledge, such as the analysis of fingerprints, ballistics, or DNA found at a crime scene, a polygraph expert can supply the jury only with another opinion." The Supreme Court summarized their findings by stating that the use of polygraph was "no more accurate than coin flip.") and mythbusters proved that even a human can pick up on the different scents the body makes when worked up vs frightful/nervous (which happens a lot of the time when lying), a lot of emotions have the same chemical reaction for example frightened/nervous both correlate with being anxious so the scent/reaction is the same. No its not something you can just do you have to be trained but it's still possible so its not really as big a problem in writing i.e plot holes/lazy writing as you might think as long as its explained >~< and the reason one wouldnt be able to pick up on a half truth half lie is because the person feels comfortable with it because to them they can see it as the truth there for no reason to fear being caught.
Amocin 26th Jan 2017, 10:18 AM edit delete reply

Thats smelling fear/anxiousness. Smelling a feeling is not smelling what is causing that feeling. It's not mind reading, you can guess that somebody may be fearful or nervous that they are going to be caught lying, but they could just as easily be intimidated by the person questioning them.

Here is a story that pretty much messes with that lie stuff from my point of view. I was sent to detention in middle school for chewing gum. I had never been in trouble at school before, so when I got there, I chewed on my tongue as a nervous habit, because I lacked gum to chew too. Detention teacher told me to spit out my gum, I told him I wasnt chewing any. He said "I saw you chewing it." I am about ready to be in tears, I am nervous and fearful. I say again I am not chewing gum. An hour later he sees me chewing on my tongue again and starts yelling at me about 'chewing gum'. I am not used to being called a liar, but he certainly was. I was nervous, fearful, and anxious.. but I wasnt lying, I had no gum. - If he could smell lies, you are telling me now that he would be able to tell that I was lying... even though I wasnt.

This is my problem with this, and this is my -Opinion - on a fictional situation. It doesnt work for me. There are too many factors for this to be unreliable in my opinion.

I understand that some people may take offense to this, mostly because you have favorite books and stories that use this as a story telling feature. Im not saying they are crap, I havent even read a lot of the books you guys are talking about. But I dont like it on principle. Even though many of you have explained it, I dont see how it can work consistently, and therefor, is useless, unless you also know the person, how easily they get worked up, and so on.

But lets all agree to disagree here and move on.

In short, I dont like it, but I am sorry if I insulted any of you for liking it, I dont judge you for liking lie smelling. But you will not change my opinion on this, no more than I can change yours. I understand your point of view, and I hope that you can understand and respect my point of view.

I wish for you to re-read my comment i stated it was a trained skill and not just anyone could do it so i was merely defending the notion it was possible not that anyone could do it based on species. I respect your opinion and in a form was agreeing with you that it is bull that a character could just do a random thing simply because of its species and the lie detector thing was simply because i saw it mentioned and thought i'd give a little history >~<
AnnaAndCharles 26th Jan 2017, 1:41 AM edit delete reply
If you go on to read the Alpha and Omega series they explain better that werewolves can learn to detect lies because of various heightened senses but they have to learn to use their ears and noses they're not just magically capable of knowing things just because they now have a heightened sense of smell.
Viverred 25th Jan 2017, 1:24 AM edit delete reply
Any world/ setting/ etc would be absolutely mind numbing BORING if everyone had to be truthful 100% all of the time. Heck even the real life doesn't get along without a plethora of 'little white lies'. smelling lies as a gimmick power for a game, or a one off in a story, eh okay. can't say i 'hate' it. Just think there better options for story purposes. (Rant not intended.)

Why does Koutak have Badrang the Tyrant's eyes from redwall? Is it because of his age? Make him look more fearsome? Artistic choice?
Amocin 23rd Jan 2017, 10:03 AM edit delete reply
Amocin
I honestly had to look up that character...

Honestly it's an artistic choice but it was more closely tied to Mufasa's eye color.
Mikotaj Fenris 23rd Jan 2017, 10:37 AM edit delete reply
I just got into Redwall lately and I noticed too that Koutak's eyes do look like Badrang, and Captain Trauman Coddlefish Clogg, who I think is Badrang's half brother because of those eyes.

You should check out the series sometime Amocin it's worth the watch or read. Or Both

Also, it looks like someone is going to get their eyes ripped out and then skullfucked by Koutak.
Mikotaj Fenris 23rd Jan 2017, 10:39 AM edit delete reply
That makes sense to have Mufasa's eye color though, as he is the Patriarch Alpha of the family.

Jet's face in the first panel is so adorable. I trust her, totally. So she killed innocent people and just barely switched allegiances after being surrounded by her former enemies ... BUT LOOK AT THAT FACE! Do it.
Kyre_Dusk 24th Jan 2017, 3:23 AM edit delete reply
Ghath better watch his back pretty closely, because Koutack has a few reasons to see him dead again; abandoning his adopted daughter with Mordin and, telling her the truth of what actually happened prior to her being bitten.
Amocin 24th Jan 2017, 4:01 AM edit delete reply
Amocin
Kinar isnt adopted...
Kyre_Dusk 25th Jan 2017, 3:26 PM edit delete reply
I'm just using that term loosely to refer to Koutack, as alpha male, taking her under his wing after she was bitten, seeing as he refers to her as "my girl" in p169. So, in one sense, Kinar is an 'adopted' member of the pack. That's my perception of things.
Amocin 25th Jan 2017, 4:33 PM edit delete reply
Amocin
Im sorry Kyre, but even loosley, that still doesnt fit. Kinar is Koutack's flesh and blood, she has always been 'under his wing', from the moment she was born. You can only adopt something if there is no prior connection, if there is a disconnect, and there never was with Kinar and her Parents.
Kyre_Dusk 26th Jan 2017, 3:42 PM edit delete reply
My mistake, sorry. Wasn't thinking much.
Marin027 24th Jan 2017, 5:20 AM edit delete reply
First of Koutack was in a feral state at that time and not aware of what he done and Ghath even knows this, so why sohuld he be angry at something no one was able to control as he stated himself a few pages ago.

Second, they all assumed he was dead and not knowed someone raised him as a Deathknight again.

Third, as Amocin said, Kinar is not adopted, no idea how you got that impression.
